(Lesson 4462)(04-21-24) Luke 24:33-40
“And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon. And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread. And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet.”
Today’s quote describes the events following the encounter on the road to Emmaus. After recognizing Jesus in the breaking of bread, the two disciples immediately returned to Jerusalem. There, they found the eleven apostles and other followers gathered together, where they affirmed, "The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon." As they shared their own experience from the road to Emmaus and how they recognized Jesus when he broke bread, Jesus himself suddenly appeared among them and greeted them with "Peace be unto you." In a state of wonder, they initially thought they were seeing a ghost. Jesus then showed them his hands and feet, which bore the wounds of crucifixion, and asked them to touch him to verify that he is indeed flesh and bones, unlike a spirit. As they still struggled with disbelief, but now mixed with joy, Jesus asked for something to eat. They gave him a piece of broiled fish and some honeycomb, which he took and ate in their presence, further proving he is not a ghost but indeed Jesus resurrected in a physical body.~
