(Lesson 4448)(04-07-24) Luke 22:45-51
“And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow, And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him. But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss? When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword? And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.”
Today’s quote tells us that after Jesus finished His intense prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, He returned to His disciples and found them sleeping, overwhelmed by sorrow, He admonished them to wake and pray to avoid temptation. It was then that a mob led by Judas approached Jesus to take Him to His death. As this betrayal unfolded, the disciples, realizing what was about to happen, asked Jesus if they should fight with their swords. One of them struck the servant of the high priest with a sword, cutting off his right ear. Jesus immediately responded by touching the servant's ear and healing him. Jesus also spoke to the mob, questioning the necessity of coming against Him with swords and clubs as if He were a criminal after He had been among them in peace so many times before.~
