(Lesson 4454)(04-13-24) Luke 23:26-31
“nd as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus. And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him. But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children. For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck. Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us. For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?”
Today’s quote relates that as Jesus was led away to be crucified, Simon of Cyrene was compelled by the Roman soldiers to carry the cross on behalf of Jesus, who was weakened by the beatings inflicted by the Romans and the Jews. Along the route, a large crowd of people, including weeping and mourning women, followed Him. Jesus turned to these women and told them not to weep for Him but to weep for themselves and their children, He foretold horrible events that would make people wish for the mountains to fall on them and the hills to cover them. This passage describes the impending judgment and sorrow that awaited Jerusalem.~
