Lesson 2420

(Lesson 2420)(07-31-18) Mark 3:1-12
“And he entered again into the synagogue; and there was a man there which had a withered hand. And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the sabbath day; that they might accuse him. And he saith unto the man which had the withered hand, Stand forth. And he saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace. And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other. And the Pharisees went forth, and straightway took counsel with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him. But Jesus withdrew himself with his disciples to the sea: and a great multitude from Galilee followed him, and from Judaea, And from Jerusalem, and from Idumaea, and from beyond Jordan; and they about Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they had heard what great things he did, came unto him. And he spake to his disciples, that a small ship should wait on him because of the multitude, lest they should throng him. For he had healed many; insomuch that they pressed upon him for to touch him, as many as had plagues. And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God. And he straitly charged them that they should not make him known.”

In today’s quote, Jesus continued performing miraculous healing as the Pharisees set about trying to find ways to destroy Him.
The quote relates that Jesus was “grieved” by the hardness of the hearts of the Pharisees.~

Lesson 2419

(Lesson 2419)(07-30-18) Mark 2:23-28
“And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn. And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful? And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him? How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him? And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.”

In today’s quote, Jesus again established that the law did not apply to His chosen Apostles; He, being God in the flesh, had the power to exempt them from the law.~

Lesson 2418

(Lesson 2418)(07-29-18) Mark 2:21-22
“ No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse. And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.”

This lesson established that the old laws to which all Jews, throughout their history, had been subjected, did not apply to the apostles of Christ since those laws would be fulfilled and essentially done away by the new law of  grace upon the completion of Jesus’ divine mission to die for the sins of the world; Therefore, Jesus made the point that the rules of the old law could not be applied to those who were now made subject to the new law of grace through faith of which He was the initiator.
Jesus’ reference to an “old garment” and “old bottles” was a reference to the old law that did not apply to His apostles. ~

Lesson 2417

(Lesson 2417)(07-28-18) Mark 2:18-20
“And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not? And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.”

Today’s quote refers to one of the major religious practices of the Jews; therefore, in order to better understand today’s lesson, we should define the purpose of that tradition.
To the Jews, fasting was done to memorialize some past suffering that they had endured. It was a means by which practicing Jews could associate themselves with those events of suffering and in some way atone for their own participation in the things that led, or might lead, to those kinds of sufferings.
Today’s quote relates how the apostles of Christ ignored the tradition of fasting and how Jesus explained their reasons for so doing. Since fasting was connected with suffering, the apostles were not bound to fast seeing that they had no reason to suffer since their Lord was present with them; However, in the quote, Jesus advised His inquirers that once He had completed His divine mission and returned to the Father, the apostles would again be charged to abide by the tradition of fasting.
The tradition of fasting is seldom practiced, and is not required, among many of today’s “Christians”.~

Lesson 2416

(Lesson 2416)(07-27-18) Mark 2:13-17
“And he went forth again by the sea side; and all the multitude resorted unto him, and he taught them. And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him. And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him. And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners? When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

The first part of today’s quote relates that Jesus selected Levi as one of His apostles. In the last part of the quote, Jesus, justifying His association with sinners, made it clear that God’s will would be better served if He preached to the lost rather than to the choir.
Sadly, there are too many of today’s “Christians” who choose to spend their spiritual energy filling the pews at “church”, listening to a preacher preach to the already saved, rather than going to where the “sinners” are and spreading God’s amazing, saving grace among those lost souls who are in dire need of that grace. That is exactly what this lesson tells us that Jesus did.~

Lesson 2415

(Lesson 2415)(07-26-18) Mark 2:1-12
“And again he entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house. And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them. And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four. And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay. When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee. But there was certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts, Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only? And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts? Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house. And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.”

In today’s quote, Jesus performs more miraculous healing and the scribes make their first accusations against Him because He said, when healing the palsied man, “thy sins are forgiven thee”. Jesus, upon reading their thoughts, in essence, said that it made no difference how He healed the man so long as the palsy was gone from him.

Lesson 2414

(Lesson 2414)(07-25-18) Mark 1:35-45
“ And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed. And Simon and they that were with him followed after him. And when they had found him, they said unto him, All men seek for thee. And he said unto them, Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth. And he preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and cast out devils. And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean. And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed. And he straitly charged him, and forthwith sent him away; And saith unto him, See thou say nothing to any man: but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing those things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. But he went out, and began to publish it much, and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places: and they came to him from every quarter.”

Today’s lesson explains how, through the testimony of those He healed, the knowledge of Jesus’ divine power was spread across the region of Galilee.~

Lesson 2413

(Lesson 2413)(07-24-18) Mark 1:29-34
“ And forthwith, when they were come out of the synagogue, they entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. But Simon's wife's mother lay sick of a fever, and anon they tell him of her. And he came and took her by the hand, and lifted her up; and immediately the fever left her, and she ministered unto them. And at even, when the sun did set, they brought unto him all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils. And all the city was gathered together at the door. And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils; and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him.”

Today’s quote relates how Jesus started, with Peter’s mother-in-law, a campaign of miraculous healing that would continue until He was crucified.~

Lesson 2412

(Lesson 2412)(07-23-18) Mark 1:21-28
“ And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught. And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes. And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him. And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him. And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee.”

Today’s lesson relates how the leadership of the Jews were amazed by Jesus’ knowledge of God’s laws and the awesome power over the unclean spirit that Jesus displayed in the temple. Even the unclean spirit recognized Jesus as the “holy one of God”.  ~

Lesson 2411

(Lesson 2411)(07-22-18) Mark 1:16-20
“Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men. And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him. And when he had gone a little farther thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets. And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.”

Today’s quote relates how Jesus selected the first four of His apostles. We should not also that Mark’s account of that process differs slightly from Matthew’s account: “And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.” (Matthew 4:18-20)
Comparing the two account helps us confirm the accuracy of both. It is important that we be able to make the comparison because later in this study we will again make comparisons of the different accounts in order to clarify the intent of both.~

Lesson 2410

(Lesson 2410)(07-21-18) Mark 1:14-15
“ Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.”

Today’s lesson again confirms that Jesus came preaching the same message that John the Baptist had taught; essentially, that the Jewish people were to repent and believe the gospel of repentance. Will find in a later lesson that the seventy two disciples Jesus sent out were to teach the same message.
It behooves us to again remember that the gospel that Jesus taught to the Jews was a different message than the one thatt would be taught after He had completed His divine mission to live a perfect life and to die for the sins of the world.~

Lesson 2409

(Lesson 2409)(07-20-18) Mark 1:12-13
“And immediately the spirit driveth him into the wilderness. And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him.”

Today’s quote is Mark’s account of the temptation of Jesus. It differs considerably from the Matthew account in that Matthew relates the details of that temptation. The following is Matthews account.
“Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.” (Matthew 4:1-11)~

Lesson 2408

(Lesson 2408)(07-19-18) Mark 1:9-11
“And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan. And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him: And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

Today’s quote relates that , in obedience with Jewish law, Jesus went to John and was ritually baptized, (immersed) into water to cermonially remove the *“filth of the flesh”; And to fulfill the law for all those who would come to believe Him. After which; He was recognized by God the Father as His Son, and qualified to be the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all mankind.
Jesus lived a perfect life and fulfilled the law so that we who believe in Him, by that faith in Him, can have everlasting life. Thank you Jesus!

Lesson 2407

(Lesson 2407)(07-18-18) Mark 1:5-8
“And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins. And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey; And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose. I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.”

The first part of today’s quote relates that many of the Jews: “they of Jerusalem”, after hearing John’s message, (hearing the message being one action which was described as a baptism) went to John and received yet another intention of the word baptism, the ritual Jewish water immersion in preparation for confession of sins: “and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan”.
Within the first part of today’s quote, there are two applications of a form of the word baptize: One describes an overwhelming by, or acceptance of, John’s message, and the other, a required ritual Jewish water bath at the hands of John the Baptist.
In the final part of the quote, we find yet another application of that same word “baptize” when John said; “I indeed have ‘baptized’ you with water: but he shall ‘baptize’ you with the Holy Ghost.”
In that part of the quote, John verbally differentiated between two distinctly different applications of the word “baptize”: One usaged referred to the ritual water baptism that John had administered for the Jews from Jerusalem; “I indeed have baptized you with water”. The other usage referred to a cloaking of those who would come to believe in Jesus Christ, within the Holy Ghost; “he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.”
The point of this commentary is to firmly establish that there are many different applications and usages of the word “baptize” within the New Testament. This is very important to note because, as we continue these lessons, this knowledge will clearly refute the erroneous and established contention that water baptism is requisite to eternal salvation.~
There will be further clarification of this lesson as we continue.

Lesson 2406

(Lesson 2406)(07-17-18) Mark 1:4
“John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins."

Today’s quote relates two distinctly different intents, or definitions, for the same root word, baptize (or baptism). In today’s quote, the first application of the word “baptize” defines a ritual, of water immersion, supervised by John, that was uniformly required of every religeously devoted Jew before he/she could enter into any form of religious facility or practice.
The second application of the word, “baptism”, defines the message John taught, the message requiring that those who heard it should repent their old ways, accept God’s grace and redevote themselves to their relationship with God. John did indeed, “preach” the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. In the first application (baptize) defined a person being enwrapped in water, the second application (baptism) defined the acceptance of a certain teaching.
John could not ‘preach’ a physical water baptism, he ‘preached’ a message; Therefore, the word ‘baptize’, as applied in the quote, refers to a physical water immersion, The word ‘baptism’ refers to the message John preached.~

Lesson 2405

(Lesson 2405)(07-16-18) Mark 1:1-3
“The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.”
Today’s lesson relates the coming of John the Baptist. His mission was to prepare the Jews for the coming if Jesus, the Messiah.~

Lesson 2404

(Lesson 2404)(07-15-18) Matthew 28:16-20
“Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

Today’s lesson is taken from a part of yesterday’s quote; wherein, Jesus said, “All power is given unto me in heaven and earth.", "and, lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the world. Amen.” That statement means exactly what it says and implies that those of us whom have trusted in Christ Jesus and are indeed the children of God, through the power of the Holy Spirit that dwells in us, also have all power over the influences of this earth; Therefore, it is imperative that we apply that power, through prayer, to aid us in our efforts to spread the good news of the amazing grace of God “to all nations”, as Jesus commanded that we do in today’s quote.~

Lesson 2403

Lesson 2403)(07-14-18) Matthew 28:16-20
“Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
Today’s quote contains Jesus’ final instructions to His apostles. Therein, Jesus told His apostles, “Go ye therefore, and TEACH all nations, BAPTIZING them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: TEACHING them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you:”. That instruction is one of the most mis-understood passages in the entire New Testament seeing that most bible scholars make the very wrong assumption that the word “baptizing”, as it is applied in the quote, is in reference to an action that is to be taken by some form of water ritual. If we actually read that instruction in the manner in which it was written, and is intended to be understood, we find that the act of “baptizing” was to be concurrent with and a part of the teaching. To fully understand the intent of Jesus’ instructions, we must first understand that the English word baptize was *transliterated from the Greek word baptizo, (or baptidzo). We should note that transliteration makes no attempt to define or bring forward all the implications of the term being transliterated. Baptizo, in the Greek language, means to place one item or entity into a certain substance of circumstance, with the intent to alter the appearance or character of the item or entity that is to be ‘baptizoed’. The term “baptize” literally has many implications, the usages of which depend entirely upon the context within which the term is applied. To baptizo, or baptize can literally imply the altering of someone or some thing by immersing them into into a water solution, or altering one by “teaching” that one a new doctrine. Therefore, the latter is the implied intent of Jesus demand that His apostles “baptize” all nations. The baptism Jesus demanded was a part of the teaching process in that the apostles were to convert, or alter, “all nations” by ‘teaching’ them, and thereby ‘baptizing’ them, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Therefore, both words, teaching and baptizing, are concurrent in today’s quote, and DO NOT suggest that a water ritual should be a part of what the apostles were to teach “all nations”. ~
NOTE: I realize that  this analysis is complex and maybe hard to understand. Therefore, if anyone has questions or comments concerning any part of this commentary, please feel free to ask.

Lesson 2402

(Lesson 2402)(07-13-18) Matthew 28:11-15
“ Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done. And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers, Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept. And if this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you. So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.”

Today’s lesson relates how the Jews conspired to cover up the fact that Jesus had indeed defeated death and had arisen from the tomb.
Praise God that the efforts of those Jews failed, and that the amazing, saving grace of God has been made known and available to all those who will put their faith in Jesus.~

Lesson 2401

(Lesson 2401)(07-12-18) Matthew 28:9-10
“And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.”

Today’s quote relates that Jesus met with the two Marys after His resurrection. Telling them to advise the other disciples of His resurrection.
NOTE: This quote, the Matthew account of the things that happened after Jesus’ death, differs from the accounts of the same events in some of the other gospels. We will try to rectify those differences as these lessons progress.~

Lesson 2400

(Lesson 2400)(07-11-18) Matthew 28:1-8
“In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you. And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.”

Today’s quote contains the most wonderful phrase ever written, that is; “He is risen”. There is nothing written that is more important to all of mankind than those three words.
When Jesus arose from the dead and defied the grave, He completed the perfect sacrifice necessary to provide salvation to all who will accept it.
“If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (Romans 10:9-10 in part)
    What a blessing!~

Lesson 2399

(Lesson 2399)(07-10-18) Matthew 27:55-66
“And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him: Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedees children. When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple: He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered. And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed. And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre. Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate, Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again. Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first. Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can. So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.”

Today’s quote relates how, after Jesus had died and been taken down from the cross, His body was prepared and laid to rest in a borrowed tomb, sealed by a heavy stone and guarded by Roman soldiers.~

Lesson 2398

(Lesson 2398)(07-09-18) Matthew 27:51-54
“And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many. Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.”
Today's quote relates that as Jesus died, the “veil of the temple” was torn apart. That act is very important to every soul who are now, or will become/ a believer in Jesus Christ.
Until Jesus died, completing His perfect sacrifice, that veil had always been a barrier between sinners and the presence of God. Until the death of Jesus, the Jewish high priest, representing the sacrifices of all the Jewish people, was the only person allowed entry, only once a year, into the “holy of holies”, (a place in the temple designated as the actual presence of God), where he would offer atonement for the sins of all the Jewish people.
After Jesus died, and the veil was destroyed, the door to God’s presence was opened through Jesus Christ, and the atonement for the sins of ALL mankind could be accomplished by simply accepting His sacrifice as perfect atonement for their/our sins.
The tearing of the veil is a very important symbol to all of us who believe in Jesus Christ to eternal life. ~

Lesson 2397

(Lesson 2397)(07-08-18) Matthew 27:38-50
“Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left. And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth. Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias. And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him. Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.

Today’s quote relates how our Savior was mocked and mercilessly murdered by a cold and unbelieving mob.
It is imperative that we, the children of God, although is is almost impossible for some, look beyond the emotional outrage instilled by that horrible crucifixion scene. That is because by looking beyond, we can see, and appreciate, the earthshakingly wonderful thing that was accomplished by our Lord Jesus Christ during that fateful three days of His suffering. Through those three days our Lord provided a means of eternal salvation for all of us who have, and will, come to believe in Him. What a wonderful and blessed thing, in spite of the suffering. Praise God for His mercy and grace.~

Lesson 2396

(Lesson 2396)(07-07-18) Matthew 27:32-37
“And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross. And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull, They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink. And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. And sitting down they watched him there; And set up over his head his accusation written, This Is Jesus The King Of The Jews.”

Today’s quote relates how Jesus was, again, mocked and tortured as He was being crucified for our sins.~

Lesson 2395

(Lesson 2395)(07-06-18) Matthew 27:27-31
“ Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers. And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head. And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.”

Today’s lesson relates how Jesus was further tortured and humiliated at the hands of the Roman soldiers before He was taken out to be crucified.
Again, it is important to note that the things that occurred in today’s quote, although emotionally horrible for us and physically horrible for our Savior, were a part of God’s overall plan to redeem those of us who will believe in Jesus.~

Lesson 2394

(Lesson 2394)(07-05-18) Matthew 27:15-26
“Now at that feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would. And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas. Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ? For he knew that for envy they had delivered him. When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him. But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas. Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified. And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified. When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children. Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.”

Today’s quote relates how the leaders of the Jews chose Barabbas to be freed and left Jesus to be crucified.
We must remember that what occurred that day, although it casts those participating Jews as horrible people, was a part of God’s overall plan to provide eternal redemption for those of us who have chosen, and will choose, to believe in Jesus Christ. That generation of Jews had turned their backs on God, and were, of a necessity, pre-chosen by God through prophecy, to be guilty of that horrible yet blessed deed and therefor receive God’s wrath throughout the ages.~

Lesson 2393

(Lesson 2393)(07-04-18) Matthew 27:11-14
“And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest. And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing. Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee? And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.”

Today’s lesson relates how Pilate “marvelled greatly” when Jesus would not defend Himself against the bogus charges that were brought by the chief priests of the Jews.~

Lesson 2392

(Lesson 2392)(07-03-18) Matthew 27:1-10
“ When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death: And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor. Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value; And gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me.”

Today’s lesson relates how Judas reacted after realizing what he had caused by betraying Jesus. After failing at an attempt to return the thirty pieces of silver, this account states that Judas hung himself. That is contradicted by what is said in Acts 1:18, which states that he fell from a cliff. The contradiction makes no difference to the actual chain of events, seeing that in both accounts, Judas was so ashamed of what he had done, that he took his own life.~

Lesson 2391

(Lesson 2391)(07-02-18) Matthew 26:55-75
“In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me. But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled. And they that had laid hold on Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. But Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest's palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end. Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death; But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses, And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days. And the high priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee? But Jesus held his peace, And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God. Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy. What think ye? They answered and said, He is guilty of death. Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands, Saying, Prophesy unto us, thou Christ, Who is he that smote thee? Now Peter sat without in the palace: and a damsel came unto him, saying, Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee. But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest. And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth. And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man. And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them; for thy speech bewrayeth thee. Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew. And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.”

This lesson relates how all the apostles deserted Jesus as He was captured by the Jews, given a mock hearing, beaten, spat on and horribly humiliated.
It also relates that, just as Jesus said, Peter, one of the most trusted apostles, denied Him three times before the rooster would crow the following morning.
As was said in an earlier lesson, that whole event is emotionally hard for us to imagine. However, those events were necessary to fulfill ancient prophecy so that we, today, as well as those whom have gome before us, can have access to eternal life through faith in the virgin born life, death, burial, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God.~

Lesson 2390

(Lesson 2390)(07-01-18) Matthew 26:46-54
“ Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me. And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people. Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast. And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him. And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus and took him. And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear. Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?”

In today’s lesson, Judas completes the horrible task of betraying Jesus to those who would eventually have Him killed.
In one respect, we should appreciate what Judas did. Had he not betrayed Jesus to His enemies, a part of God’s plan for the redemption of the souls of mankind, we would not have a sacrifice for our sins.
It is natural for us to feel sorry for Jesus and despise Judas for what he had done on an emotional level, however, we should praise God for His master plan providing a means for our salvation through faith in the perfect sacrifice of Jesus, even if, by prophesy, Judas was made the necessary goat.~
