(Lesson 2307)(04-05-18) Matthew 9:14-17
“Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not? And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast. No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse. Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.”
In today’s quote, by using the two analogies, knowing that once He had completed His divine mission to fulfill the old Hebrew laws, Jesus explained that the rules of the old Law could not apply to those bound by the new law of faith.
Jesus knew that His disciples, being the first members of the new “kingdom”, were exempt from the rules of the old Law and traditions. Therefore, they were not required to fast as was the tradition of the Jews.
Too many of today’s “Christians” still bind themselves to the rules of the old laws of the Jews to aid in their quest for eternal life, while either unaware of, or totally ignoring the fact that: “whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all, (James 2:10)”. In order to attain eternal redemption, a lost soul must either obey every tiny bit of the old Testament law OR simply confess their sins and accept the righteousness imputed into those who believe in the life, death, burial, resurrection and ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ.~
