(Lesson 2849)(10-14-19) 1 Corinthians 1:12-13
“Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?”
In today’s lesson, Paul begins to point out and condemn the dissension that had arisen in the church at Corinth.
Judging by what he wrote in today’s quote, that dissension stemmed from a gross misunderstanding of the very essence of what it means to be a child of God, and therefore a member of His church.
In the last sentence of today’s quote, Paul identified the problem to be misplaced faith. Some had obviously believed in Apollos, some believed in Paul etc., and some had rightfully put their faith in Jesus Christ.
It is very important to note that when Paul pointed out their problem, it was that some had placed their faith in whomever had ritually “baptized” them AND NOT in Jesus Christ alone.
The Corinthians were guilty of the same mistaken contention that has befallen so many today whereas, in their minds, faith in the ritual of water baptism as a means to everlasting salvation, has replaced the blood of Jesus Christ. there is NO redemption except that which comes through faith in Jesus Christ alone.
In the next lessons, Paul will correct the error of the Corinthians by verifying that there is NO redemption except that which comes through faith in Jesus Christ alone..~
