(Lesson 2837)(10-02-19) Romans 14:1-7
“Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations. For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs. Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him. Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand. One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks. For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.”
This fourteenth chapter of Romans is a lesson unto itself; However, I have separated this part because it is an important lesson contained in the whole.
Therein, Paul made the very important resolution that as Christian people, we are to allow our brothers and sisters in Christ to pretty much worship as they please. That point is made clear in today’s quote.
The vast majority of today’s Christian denominations consider Sunday to be the day that has been divinely chosen as the correct day which one should set aside as a day of rest and a day of worship. As Paul makes clear in the quote, no one day is more holy than another. But rather, every day belongs to God and should be considered a day of worship. That same consideration is to be applied to all the differing ways Christians choose to worship.
In all, this lesson relates that we are to let everyone worship as they please, unless that worship requires submitting oneself to some ritual that is believed to be a required ‘step’ toward eternal salvation. An example of which is the ritual of water baptism. That ritual is regarded by the majority of so-called Christians, as a required step to gaining eternal salvation. As is clearly taught throughout the New Testament, eternal salvation comes ONLY through faith in the life, death, burial, resurrection and ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ. One CANNOT serve two masters, either one’s faith is in a water baptismal ritual or, that faith is in Christ Jesus.~
