Lesson 2628

(Lesson 2628)(03-04-19) John 24-28
“And they which were sent were of the Pharisees. And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet? John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose. These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.”

Today’s quote is John’s account of the same events that were described in Matthew 3:11, (“I indeed baptize you with water UNTO repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire”), Mark 1:8 (“I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.”) and Luke 3:16 (“John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:”). In all three accounts, it is clearly established that the water baptisms that were performed by John the Baptist were the same ritual baptisms that had always been traditionally, and by law, demanded of any Jew who was seeking redemption from sin. All four accounts clearly establish that water baptism is NOT the baptism that instills the Holy Ghost, but rather it is the spiritual baptism that is accomplished through faith in Jesus Christ that remits, saves a sinner’s eternal soul and instills the Holy Ghost.~
