"Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; And did all eat the same spiritual meat; And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ."
In this quote, Paul told the Corinthian Jews how their forefathers had been bound to Moses by the common experience of crossing the parted Red Sea.
There are many today who wrongfully believe that Paul's reference symbolized a water immersion (baptism), simply because he applied the term "baptized" to describe the uniting caused by the event that tied the Hebrew people together as they escaped Egyptian captivity.
It behooves us to remember that the word "baptized" is a transliteration of the Greek word "baptizO" which means; to place one item or entity into another for the purpose of permanently altering the state of that item or entity.
In transliteration, the intended meaning of a word is not expressed, it is merely replaced by a manufactured, sound alike, word from the language to which the original word is to be transliterated, in this case the word baptizO is transliterated from Greek to English.
I will devote tomorrows lesson to explaining exactly what all this implies.~
