Lesson 480

(Lesson 480)(12-08-12) 1 Corinthians 14:34-40, "Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church. What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only? If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord. But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant. Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. Let all things be done decently and in order."

Today's lesson covers the last portion of Paul's instructions to the Church concerning the spiritual gifts of tongues and prophesy. He reiterates his earlier position then says that all gifts should be managed "decently and in order".

Paul also says, "Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church."

It is hard to imagine that Paul was giving orders from God when he made that statement. As a matter of fact he even said that this restriction on women in the Church was written in the Law. Since it is made clear in Galatians 3:28 that there should be no such discrimination, "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither MALE NOR FEMALE: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus." I believe women have a role in the Church, however since there are clear qualifications that must be met in seating Deacons and Bishops etc, (must be a man of one wife) 1 Timothy 3:2, "A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;" 1 Timothy 3:12, "Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well." since these offices must be held by "husbands", the girls are hereby scripturally blocked from holding those positions.~
