"And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins. And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey; And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose. I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost."
In today's lesson, John explains that the water baptism he performed was NOT the baptism that saves the eternal soul. He made it clear that Jesus, who would come after him, was the one who would indeed bring the baptism of the Holy Ghost upon those who would believe in Him. That baptism does indeed save and sanctify the eternal souls of the lost.
The quote says that Jews, in obedience to Old Testament Hebrew law, came from all over that area to submit themselves to the water baptism that John the Baptist performed. That baptism was done so that their bodies, again according to the old law, would be ritually cleansed before repenting in preparation for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.~
