Lesson 1709

(Lesson 1709)(06-14-16) Luke 5:12-16

"And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him. And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. But so much the more went there a fame abroad of him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities. And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed."

Today's quote relates how a leper, expressing his faith, bowed to Jesus and requested that he be healed of the horrible disease. Jesus touched the man and commanded that he be healed and immediately the leprosy disappeared.

We should make note that after He had cleansed the leper, Jesus said, "go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them." That demand was very important in that it demonstrated to the Jewish hierarchy how determined Jesus was that every interaction He had with the people, even to administering of miraculous healing, be done in accordance with the Law of Moses. For all Jews, obedience was necessary because the Law of Moses remained in full affect until Jesus fulfilled it by living a perfect, sin free, life and offering Himself as a perfect sacrifice for the sins of all mankind.~

Lesson 1708

(Lesson 1708)(06-13-16) Luke 5:1-11

"And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken: And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him."

In today's lesson, we see that Luke's account of Jesus selecting the first of His twelve apostles differs significantly from the accounts of Matthew and Mark, wherein Jesus selected Peter first and appointed Him the "rock" upon which the church would be built. Because of the differences in the three accounts, I have listed them all below for comparison.

Matthew 4:18-22; "And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. And they straightway left their nets, and followed him. And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them. And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him." (Matthew 18-22)

Mark 1:16-20; "Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men. And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him. And when he had gone a little further thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets. And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him."

It is difficult to determine the meaning, or significance, of the noted differences in the first three accounts. When these lessons reach the book of John, we will learn that his account also differs greatly from either of the the above three. We will further discuss the possible implications of those differences when we have studied John's account of the apostles selection.~

Lesson 1707

(Lesson 1707)(06-12-16) Luke 4:31-44

"And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days. And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power. And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not. And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out. And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about. And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her. And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them. Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them. And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ. And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them. And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent. And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee."

Today's lesson demonstrates how Jesus went about Capernaum casting out demons, who recognized Him as the Son of God, and healing all manner of illness among the people as He preached to them the coming of the kingdom of God.~

Lesson 1706

(Lesson 1706)(06-11-16) Luke 4:14-30

"And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about. And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all. And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son? And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country. And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country. But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land; But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow. And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian. And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. But he passing through the midst of them went his way,"

Today's quote demonstrates how Jesus was rejected by His own people in Galilee. His life was eventually threatened and He was chased out of town.

Jesus said, "No prophet is accepted in his own country". We can only imagine what He must have gone through trying to convince the very people He had grown up with, that suddenly He was the Son of God. Even though His people had the writings of Moses, the prophets and John the Baptist to prepare them of His coming, they didn't have it all compiled into. very easy to understand, bible form like we have today, yet still, there are millions who refuse to believe that Jesus is the, only begotten, virgin borne Son of God.~

Lesson 1705

(Lesson 1705)(06-10-16) Luke 4:1-13

"And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered. And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence: For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee: And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season."

Today's quote demonstrates how Satan tempted Jesus by offering Him power over all the kingdoms of the earth. Jesus, the man, stood firm against Satan and held tightly to the had of God.

It is important to note that, just as Satan told Jesus, ALL the kingdoms of the world were granted to him by God the Father, Satan said, "for that (the kingdoms of the world) is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it." Therefore, all the "kingdoms of the world" either still belong to Satan or to whomever Satan has chosen to give them.~

Lesson 1704

Today's lesson relates the lineage of Jesus beginning at Adam and continuing through Joseph, His human father. Mary, the mother of Jesus, was also a descendant of the House of David.

This record of ancestry is important in that it traces Jesus' lineage back to the House of David fulfilling the prophecy. ~

Lesson 1703

(Lesson 1703)(06-08-16) Luke 3:19-22

"But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison. Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased."

Today's quote demonstrates the hatred that Herod had for John the baptist, a hatred that would eventually lead to John's being beheaded at the whim of Salome, the stepdaughter of Herod.

This quote also relates that John administered water baptism for Jesus pursuant to, and in accordance with, standing Jewish law. The law required that all Jews, before entering in to any type of religious service, were to be ceremonially cleansed by baptism (immersion) in flowing water. That law was in full effect at that time and required Jesus, also a Jew, to be ceremonially cleansed before He took upon Himself the burden of being the 'one time fits all' sacrifice for the sins of the world.

The law that required Jesus to be baptized in water would remain in effect until Jesus, a perfect sinless human being, "fulfilled" the law by taking the responsibility for every element of it upon Himself and burying it in the grave for all those who would have faith in Him.

Jesus was not baptized in water to become the Son of God, He was baptized in water because He was and is the Son of God, a human Jew that was subject to all their laws until those laws were fulfilled. Had Jesus not been baptized according to the law, He could not have been a perfect sacrifice.~
