Lesson 1723

(Lesson 1723)(06-30-16) Luke 7:31-35

"And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like? They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept. For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil. The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners! But wisdom is justified of all her children."

In today's lesson Jesus told of how God the Father had sent many prophets to Israel, the last and most important of which was John the Baptist, yet Israel had continued to reject all His messengers by continuing to live in disobedience to His word. They even rejected the "baptism of John", "But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him."

This lesson also allows us to make some very important points about the intent of God's overall plan for the redemption of mankind as it was referred to in Matthew 28:19: "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost". We as the children of God are to teach the concept of the Holy Triune, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost. In order to do that we must first learn that concept and it's purpose.

It is important to note that with death of John the baptist, God ended the prophetic period of His dealings with mankind. (The first part of the Holy Triune whereas God dealt with mankind individually through His designated prophets).

The coming of John the Baptist and the teaching of the "baptism of John" marked the fulfillment of the prophetic portion of God's relationship with mankind and marked the beginning of the second part of the Holy Triune, the coming of Jesus Christ, God in the body of a man.

After Jesus had completed His divine mission of fulfilling the Law of Moses and had been sacrificed for the sins of all those who would come to believe in Him, Jesus sent His Holy Spirit (The third part of the Holy triune.) to deal with and serve the needs of the eternally saved.

We will cover the importance of this as these lessons demand.~

Lesson 1722

(Lesson 1722)(06-29-16) Luke 7:30
But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him."

Today's quote is a short one but should be studied intently to discern what is actually being said therein.
This quote further establishes that "the baptism of John" was much more than just the process of a ceremonial water immersion. "The council of God" was also a very important part of "the baptism of John".
An good example of why this distinction is so important is found in Acts 19:1-5; "And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus."
Paul asked those Ephesian disciples "Unto whom were you baptized?" they replied, "Unto John's baptism". Paul then explained that the baptism (message) John taught was merely a preparatory message meant to inspire God's chosen people to repent and prepare themselves for the coming of the Jesus, the true and ONLY remitter of sin. Paul told those disciples that "they should believe on him which should come after him (John), that is, on Christ Jesus." After hearing Paul preach that if they would believe on Jesus Christ, they would be saved and worthy to receive the Holy Ghost. In simpler terms, Paul told those disciples that "the baptism of John" was simply preparatory for the redemption that would come by grace through faith in the saving power of our Lord Jesus Christ.~

Lesson 1721

(Lesson 1721)(06-28-16) Luke 7:24-29

"And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind? But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts. But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet. This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he. And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John."

In today's lesson, Jesus recognized John the Baptist as the greatest of all the prophets. In essence, Jesus said John was much more than just a prophet, John was the forerunner for Christ and chosen by God the Father to prepare the Jews for the coming of the Messiah.

In the latter part of the lesson, Luke said, "And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John."

It is very important to note that the phrase, "the baptism of John" describes two totally different things. That phrase not only references the ritual water immersion (baptism) that John administered and was required of all Jews under the old law, "The baptism of John" also, and I believe more importantly, included the message that John was divinely chosen to bring. That message: "In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." (Matthew 3:1-2) is the same message that Jesus Himself taught: "From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." (Matthew 4:17), it is also the same message Jesus instructed His twelve apostles to teach: "These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand." (Matthew 10:5-7).

It is very important to understand all the implications of the phrase "the baptism of John", because in future lessons the intent of the usage of that phrase will determine the intent of the lesson.~

Lesson 1720

(Lesson 1720)(06-25-16) Luke 7:18-23

"And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things. And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight. Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me."

Today's quote relates that John the Baptist sent messengers to Jesus to see if He was the promised Messiah. By healing the sick and raising the dead, Jesus demonstrated the He was indeed the chosen one, the only begotten Son of God.~

LEsson 1719

(Lesson 1719)(06-24-16) Luke 7:11-17

"And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people. Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother. And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people. And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about."

Today's lesson demonstrates that only God has control over human life or death. By showing the ability to resurrect the widows son from among the dead, Jesus demonstrated that He is indeed God in the body of a man.~

Lesson 1718

(Lesson 1718)(06-23-16) Luke 7:1-10

"Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum. And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die. And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant. And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this: For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue. Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof: Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed. For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick."

Today's quote relates that, because of the man's faith, Jesus healed the servant of a Roman centurion. Upon hearing the centurion speak, Jesus declared that the man had expressed more faith through his conversation, than had been expressed by all the Jewish people, combined.

We should note that in all probability that centurion had, before that day, never met Jesus, yet through hearing of what Jesus had done and what He is capable of doing, the man had every confidence that Jesus had the power to heal his servant.

This lesson demonstrates how quickly and effectively Jesus will respond to those who have sufficient faith in Him. Even today, those who have absolute faith can accomplish anything through prayer and the ever present power of the Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ.~

Lesson 1717

(Lesson 1717)(06-22-16) Luke 6:39-49

"And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch? The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye. For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great."

Today's quote should be read over and over again and taken to heart by every child of God.

One of the most blatant wrongs among modern "Christians" is that they are quick to point fingers toward the sins of their neighbors while ignoring their own, sometimes far more obvious sins.

In today's lesson, Jesus made it very clear that true Christian people should be easily recognized by the fair and straight forward way they conduct their everyday lives and by the way they treat the people around them.

The most important thing that Jesus demanded in today's quote is that His followers are to clean up their own act before belittling their brothers and sisters for the way they live theirs.~

Lesson 1716

(Lesson 1716)(06-21-16) Luke 6:20-38

"And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh. Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets. But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation. Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep. Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets. But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also. Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them. And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same. And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again."

In today's quote, Jesus laid out the markers for what it takes to be seen as a true Christian. Herein, Jesus defined the 'dos and don'ts' that are easily recognizable in a person who truly believes in the divine gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

This lesson also clearly defines what is meant by the second "great" commandment, that commandment being that we should love our neighbor's as we love ourselves.

Those who spend their lives in obedience to the principles that are laid out in this lesson, are promised earthly rewards beyond imagination, plus the promise of everlasting life in heaven with our almighty God.~

Lesson 1715

(Lesson 1715)(06-20-16) Luke 6:12-19

"And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles; Simon, (whom he also named Peter,) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew, Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes, And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor. And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases; And they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed. And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all."

Today's quote relates how, after a night of prayer, Jesus singled out and named His chosen twelve apostles. It also tells us that He continued to heal all those who came and believed in Him.

It is worthy of note that in Luke's account of the selection of the twelve apostles, Jesus simply renamed Simon Peter, He did not specifically appoint Peter as the corner stone of His church. Although, the word Peter (Cephas or Kephas in aramaic) literally means stone in the Greek language.~

Lesson 1714

(Lesson 1714)(06-19-16) Luke 6:6-11

"And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered. And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him. But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth. Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it? And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other. And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus."

Today's lesson demonstrates how Jesus, because of His compassion even on the Sabbath, continued His miracles of healing while the leaders of the Jews began to plot ways destroy Him.

Lesson 1713

(Lesson 1713)(06-18-16) Luke 6:1-6

"And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands. And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days? And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him; How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone? And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath."

Today's lesson is another example of how Jesus, being God in man, ruled over the Sabbath and exempted His apostles from the rules of the law. ~

Lesson 1712

(Lesson 1712)(06-17-16) Luke 5:33-39

"And they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink? And he said unto them, Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days. And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old. And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish. But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved. No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better."

In today's lesson, Jesus demonstrated that He had relieved His apostles from the restrictions of the old law because He had given them the special authority and power to bring about and put into effect, a new law, His new law of eternal salvation by grace, through faith in the virgin borne life, death, resurrection and ascension of the Son of God, the perfect sacrifice.

In the last part of today's quote, Jesus demonstrated that His new law of faith should not, and could not, be intermingled with the old Hebrew law.

As we continue these lessons, we will establish that even some of the apostles tried to mingle parts of the old traditions of the Law of Moses into the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the true doctrine of that governs true Christianity still today.

The apostle Paul was, on several occasions, at odds with Peter and some of the others on several issues concerning such things as circumcision etc.

Even today many of the traditions of the old Hebrew law such as baptism and the Passover meal, are very much a part of some so-called Christian doctrines.

In today's lesson Jesus made it very clear that elements of the old law were not to be mixed with his new of faith because the old law required works, whereas His new law is based on faith alone.~

Lesson 1711

(Lesson 1711)(06-16-16) Luke 5:27-32
"And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me. And he left all, rose up, and followed him. And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them. But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners? And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."

In today's lesson, after being challenged as to why He was associating Himself with those who were considered sinners by the scribes and Pharisees, Jesus made the point that He would preach to those who wanted to hear His word and were willing to listen. He also said, in essence, He would be wasting His time trying to teach those who are convinced that they already know everything.
The problem Jesus faced then is alive and well in today's so-called churches just as it was during the time of the ministry of Jesus Christ. There are far too many of today's "Christians" who are convinced that their distorted and selfish way of interpreting the word of God is indeed the way, when in actuality, their twisted doctrines are nothing more than a means by which they can control those who follow them and a means by which they can continue to enrich themselves with wealth and power.
We should prayerfully study every line of God's word to make sure that what we accept is the true intention of that word. If we do that, the Holy Spirit will not lead us astray.~

Lesson 1710

(Lesson 1710)(06-15-16) Luke 5:17-26

"And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them. And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him. And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus. And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts? Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house. And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God. And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day."

Today's lesson tells us how Jesus continued miraculously healing those who were ill among His people.

The lesson also demonstrates that forgiveness of sin comes through faith: "And when he (Jesus) saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee." The man who was afflicted with palsy demonstrated great faith by going through what he did to get to the healing power he knew Jesus possessed.~

Lesson 1709

(Lesson 1709)(06-14-16) Luke 5:12-16

"And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him. And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. But so much the more went there a fame abroad of him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities. And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed."

Today's quote relates how a leper, expressing his faith, bowed to Jesus and requested that he be healed of the horrible disease. Jesus touched the man and commanded that he be healed and immediately the leprosy disappeared.

We should make note that after He had cleansed the leper, Jesus said, "go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them." That demand was very important in that it demonstrated to the Jewish hierarchy how determined Jesus was that every interaction He had with the people, even to administering of miraculous healing, be done in accordance with the Law of Moses. For all Jews, obedience was necessary because the Law of Moses remained in full affect until Jesus fulfilled it by living a perfect, sin free, life and offering Himself as a perfect sacrifice for the sins of all mankind.~

Lesson 1708

(Lesson 1708)(06-13-16) Luke 5:1-11

"And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken: And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him."

In today's lesson, we see that Luke's account of Jesus selecting the first of His twelve apostles differs significantly from the accounts of Matthew and Mark, wherein Jesus selected Peter first and appointed Him the "rock" upon which the church would be built. Because of the differences in the three accounts, I have listed them all below for comparison.

Matthew 4:18-22; "And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. And they straightway left their nets, and followed him. And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them. And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him." (Matthew 18-22)

Mark 1:16-20; "Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men. And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him. And when he had gone a little further thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets. And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him."

It is difficult to determine the meaning, or significance, of the noted differences in the first three accounts. When these lessons reach the book of John, we will learn that his account also differs greatly from either of the the above three. We will further discuss the possible implications of those differences when we have studied John's account of the apostles selection.~

Lesson 1707

(Lesson 1707)(06-12-16) Luke 4:31-44

"And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days. And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power. And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not. And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out. And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about. And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her. And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them. Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them. And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ. And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them. And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent. And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee."

Today's lesson demonstrates how Jesus went about Capernaum casting out demons, who recognized Him as the Son of God, and healing all manner of illness among the people as He preached to them the coming of the kingdom of God.~

Lesson 1706

(Lesson 1706)(06-11-16) Luke 4:14-30

"And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about. And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all. And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son? And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country. And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country. But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land; But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow. And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian. And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. But he passing through the midst of them went his way,"

Today's quote demonstrates how Jesus was rejected by His own people in Galilee. His life was eventually threatened and He was chased out of town.

Jesus said, "No prophet is accepted in his own country". We can only imagine what He must have gone through trying to convince the very people He had grown up with, that suddenly He was the Son of God. Even though His people had the writings of Moses, the prophets and John the Baptist to prepare them of His coming, they didn't have it all compiled into. very easy to understand, bible form like we have today, yet still, there are millions who refuse to believe that Jesus is the, only begotten, virgin borne Son of God.~

Lesson 1705

(Lesson 1705)(06-10-16) Luke 4:1-13

"And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered. And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence: For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee: And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season."

Today's quote demonstrates how Satan tempted Jesus by offering Him power over all the kingdoms of the earth. Jesus, the man, stood firm against Satan and held tightly to the had of God.

It is important to note that, just as Satan told Jesus, ALL the kingdoms of the world were granted to him by God the Father, Satan said, "for that (the kingdoms of the world) is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it." Therefore, all the "kingdoms of the world" either still belong to Satan or to whomever Satan has chosen to give them.~

Lesson 1704

(Lesson 1704)(06-09-16) Luke 3:23-38

"And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli, Which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi, which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Janna, which was the son of Joseph, Which was the son of Mattathias, which was the son of Amos, which was the son of Naum, which was the son of Esli, which was the son of Nagge, Which was the son of Maath, which was the son of Mattathias, which was the son of Semei, which was the son of Joseph, which was the son of Juda, Which was the son of Joanna, which was the son of Rhesa, which was the son of Zorobabel, which was the son of Salathiel, which was the son of Neri, Which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Addi, which was the son of Cosam, which was the son of Elmodam, which was the son of Er, Which was the son of Jose, which was the son of Eliezer, which was the son of Jorim, which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi, Which was the son of Simeon, which was the son of Juda, which was the son of Joseph, which was the son of Jonan, which was the son of Eliakim, Which was the son of Melea, which was the son of Menan, which was the son of Mattatha, which was the son of Nathan, which was the son of David, Which was the son of Jesse, which was the son of Obed, which was the son of Booz, which was the son of Salmon, which was the son of Naasson, Which was the son of Aminadab, which was the son of Aram, which was the son of Esrom, which was the son of Phares, which was the son of Juda, Which was the son of Jacob, which was the son of Isaac, which was the son of Abraham, which was the son of Thara, which was the son of Nachor, Which was the son of Saruch, which was the son of Ragau, which was the son of Phalec, which was the son of Heber, which was the son of Sala, Which was the son of Cainan, which was the son of Arphaxad, which was the son of Sem, which was the son of Noe, which was the son of Lamech, Which was the son of Mathusala, which was the son of Enoch, which was the son of Jared, which was the son of Maleleel, which was the son of Cainan, Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God."

Today's lesson relates the lineage of Jesus beginning at Adam and continuing through Joseph, His human father. Mary, the mother of Jesus, was also a descendant of the House of David.

This record of ancestry is important in that it traces Jesus' lineage back to the House of David fulfilling the prophecy. ~

Lesson 1703

(Lesson 1703)(06-08-16) Luke 3:19-22

"But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison. Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased."

Today's quote demonstrates the hatred that Herod had for John the baptist, a hatred that would eventually lead to John's being beheaded at the whim of Salome, the stepdaughter of Herod.

This quote also relates that John administered water baptism for Jesus pursuant to, and in accordance with, standing Jewish law. The law required that all Jews, before entering in to any type of religious service, were to be ceremonially cleansed by baptism (immersion) in flowing water. That law was in full effect at that time and required Jesus, also a Jew, to be ceremonially cleansed before He took upon Himself the burden of being the 'one time fits all' sacrifice for the sins of the world.

The law that required Jesus to be baptized in water would remain in effect until Jesus, a perfect sinless human being, "fulfilled" the law by taking the responsibility for every element of it upon Himself and burying it in the grave for all those who would have faith in Him.

Jesus was not baptized in water to become the Son of God, He was baptized in water because He was and is the Son of God, a human Jew that was subject to all their laws until those laws were fulfilled. Had Jesus not been baptized according to the law, He could not have been a perfect sacrifice.~

Lesson 1702

(Lesson 1702)(06-07-16) Luke 3:7-18

"Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then? He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise. Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do? And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you. And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages. And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not; John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire: Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable. And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people."

In the first part of today's quote, John demanded that those who came to hear, and take part in his baptism, should demonstrate that they had truly turned from their old ways sufficient to demonstrate real repentance. This demand also validates the contention that those who were present to hear John preach, were there to cleanse themselves both spiritually and physically for the presence of the Lord. When the people, in response to what John preached, asked, "what shall we do then?", John in essence, told them to conduct themselves in a manner befitting the chosen people of God. They were to simply to treat their brothers and sisters the same way they expected to be treated, or in essence, John told them to love their neighbors as they loved themselves.

In verse 16, John made a very, very important point. He said, "I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire". John was, of course, referring to the coming of Jesus Christ.

It is very important for us to note that John stressed the point that the "baptism" he offered and preached, was just a preparatory cleansing to ready the repenter physically and spiritually for the coming of the Lord in accordance with the Law of Moses. John also stressed a special point by saying Jesus the savior was coming and that He (Jesus) would be administering an entirely different baptism, Jesus would administer the soul redeeming baptism of the Holy Ghost and fire or in essence, the baptism of salvation by grace through faith in His virgin borne life, death, burial, resurrection and ascension.

We should be careful to separate the very different definitions of the actions implied by the usage of the word "baptism" in today's quote. Water "baptism" is merely a preparatory physical water bath that was required of all Jews as they entered into religious service. The "baptism of repentance" is a psychological cleansing that was also required of all Jews under the Law.

The "baptism" of the Holy Ghost, which is accomplished through faith in Jesus Christ, is that baptism that is mentioned in Galatians 3:26-27, "For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ."

If one is baptized into water, that one has only put on water and put off the soil of the earth. If one is baptized into Jesus Christ, that one has "put on Christ" and has eternally put off the sins of the world.~

Lesson 1701

(Lesson 1701)(06-06-16) Luke 3:1-6

"Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene, Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth; And all flesh shall see the salvation of God."

Today's lesson is continued from the quote from Luke 3:1-6.

Yesterday we determined that the "the baptism of John" was much more that just a ceremonial water bath, although water baptism according to the Law of Moses was definitely a part of John's obligation to his Jewish brethren in preparing them for the coming of the Lord.

Water immersion was definitely a part of "John's baptism", however, the most important element of that "baptism" was the message John was divinely inspired to to teach to his Hebrew brethren. That message being "repentance for the remission of sins". "And he came into all the country about Jordan, PREACHING THE BAPTISM OF REPENTANCE FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS".

The ultimate purpose of John's message was to, "Prepare ye the way of the Lord". Therefore, in order to prepare the Jews for the coming of the Lord, John was obligated to assure that under the rules of the Law, the Jewish brethren were appropriately cleansed, both in body and in spirit.

The baptisms John the Baptist administered were done in accordance with the the Law of Moses which demanded that before entering into any religious action such as prayer, fasting or the offering of a sacrifice etc, every Jew was to first clean their bodies with clean flowing water and to cleanse their spirits by repenting their sins so as to present themselves, before God, un-defiled by the filth of the earth.

As we continue our bible study, it is very important to remember that the phrase "the baptism of John" concerns much more than simple water immersion or sprinkling. When our study is complete, this knowledge will us to understand that much of what has been taught about "baptism" has been distorted by the misunderstanding of what the term actually implies in any given context.~

Lesson 1700

(Lesson 1700)(06-05-16) Luke 3:1-6

Today's lesson concerns the mission that was tasked upon John the Baptist by God the Father, even before his divinely inspired birth.

As we see in verse three of today's quote, John, "came into all the country about Jordan, PREACHING the BAPTISM of repentance for the remission of sins".

Every sincere bible student should make note that, within the context of this passage, John did NOT come PERFORMING physical water baptisms, but rather, he came PREACHING "the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins".

John was sent to preach a specific message that God had taught him in the desert.

John's divine message was clearly intended for his Jewish brethren and it was an instruction for them to "repent for the remission of sin". His message was also instructed the Jewish people to; "Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight".

Therefore, it is clear that, taken in it's proper context, the word "baptism", as it is applied in today's quote, defines a specific message, or a lesson that was to be learned by John's Jewish brethren and has nothing to do with a ceremonial water "baptism" as the rite is practiced today.~

NOTE: In the upcoming days, when our lessons reach the water baptism of Jesus, I will explain in much further detail the difference between the "baptism of John", his message, and the actual water baptisms he performed which were required of all Jews, under the Law of Moses.

Lesson 1699

(Lesson 1699)(06-04-16) Luke 2:41-52

"Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business? And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them. And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man."

Today's quote tells how Jesus, even as a child only twelve years old, was able to discuss matters concerning God and the prophets with the Hebrew elders in the temple.~

Lesson 1698

(Lesson 1698)(06-03-16) Luke 2:15-40

"And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them. And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb. And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord; (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;) And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons. And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ. And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him. And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against; (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity; And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem. And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth. And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him."

Today's quote reveals how the baby Jesus was visited, recognized and worshiped by the "shepherds" from the East. This quote also reveals how Jesus was duly circumcised and blessed by the priests as was dictated to all Jews by the Law of Moses. Those efforts were all necessary so that Jesus would enter into His ministry having perfectly fulfilled every element of the Law so as to qualify Him as the perfect, sinless sacrifice for the souls of the entire world who would come to place their faith in Him.~

Lesson 1697

(Lesson 1697)(06-02-16) Luke 2:1-14

"And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."

Today's quote relates the circumstances surrounding the miraculous birth of our Savior, our Lord Jesus Christ, the redeemer that God promised and the second part of the Holy Triune; "For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord."

Jesus is the "tree of life" that was planted in the East of Eden. "And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD." (Isaiah 59:20)

The birth of Jesus ended mankind's direct access to God "the Father", that had been until that point, accomplished through direct prayer and sacrifice, and caused that access to only come through faith in and prayer through Jesus Christ, God (the Son) in human form.

God the Father is the first part and the head of the Holy Triune, God the Son (Jesus) is the second part. The third part of the Holy Triune, God the Holy Spirit, did not come until after Jesus had completed His virgin borne life, ministry, death, burial, resurrection and ascension.

The individual eras of the three parts of the Holy triune are necessary to complete and sustain God's plan of redemption and eternal salvation of all those who will believe.~

Lesson 1696

(Lesson 1696)(06-01-16) Luke 1:57-80

"And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house. Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son. And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her. And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father. And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John. And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name. And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called. And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all. And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God. And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea. And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him. And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people, And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David; As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began: That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant; The oath which he sware to our father Abraham, That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear, In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins, Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel."

Today's lesson relates the birth of John the Baptist and foretells his divine mission: "And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins, Through the tender mercy of our God".~
