Lesson 1134

(Lesson 1134)(10-31-14) Acts 8:18-24

"And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity. Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me."

Today's lesson relates that there are those, like Simon, who will make a profession of faith in Jesus Christ simply for the benefits they might obtain

from wearing the Christian label.

Today, there are countless numbers of so called Christians who use that label purely for their own selfish gain. In many instances they use their "Christian" status to actually work directly against the will of God.

A perfect example of this has been exposed in recent years as priests and bishops of the Roman Catholic "Church" et al, have been found to have used their offices as a cover to molest the innocents within their congregations.

This practice is not limited to Catholics, there have been many so called deacons, elders, priests, bishops, evangelists, and preachers of many different religious sects who have been exposed as being guilty of all manner of lewd behavior with members of their flocks as well as using God's word to amass huge profits for themselves.

It is up to true everyday, practicing Christians, to first live their own lives within the boundaries set out by the gospel and to identify, and expose, those who would abuse their offices by engaging in such deceptive and abhorrent practices.

As is related in today's lesson, after Simon offered Peter money for the ability to use the power of the Holy Ghost, Peter warned him of the wrath of God that would come upon him, and told him to repent his evil thoughts. Simon then asked Peter to pray for him.~

Lesson 1133

(Lesson 1133)(10-30-14) Acts 8:9-17

"But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one: To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God. And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries. But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done. Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost."

Today's lesson comes from the same quote as yesterday's. This is necessary because there is a great deal of scriptural complexity and seeming contradiction within this quote.

Note first that in verse twelve, the author says; " But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, AND THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST, they were baptized, both men and women."

Obviously Philip had first preached the gospel concerning the kingdom of God and then added, that to enter the kingdom of God, one must be sanctified, by and within, "the name of Jesus Christ".

Today's lesson will concentrate on what the phrase, "the name of Jesus Christ" actually means. There are many who are wrongly convinced that the phrase simply means that anything written, wherein that phrase is applies, it simply invokes the authority of Jesus Christ.

For example, if I said, "I baptize you my brother in the name of Jesus Christ, it would be wrongly accepted that I was baptized in water under the authority of Jesus Christ. That is not at all what that phrase implies in today's lesson, as well as in many other instances throughout the New Testament.

When Philip preached "the name of Jesus Christ", he established that the concept of a resurrected Jesus Christ is the medium into which those Samarians were to be baptized, or eternally immersed. "For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ." (Galatians 3:27)

Their water baptism, which in this instance is *in parentheses, erroneously referred to as a baptism in the name of Jesus Christ, had NOTHING to do with either their salvation or their ability to receive the Holy Ghost.

As we see later in the text, because those Samarians had only been baptized in water, and not actually in the "name of Jesus Christ", they had not yet received the Holy Ghost.

The author of this text, referring to Peter and John, said: "Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost." Those Samarians were clearly saved AFTER Peter and John had prayed with them.

Note that in *parentheses the author said, "(For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)"

There seems to have been an error made by the scholars who translated and transliterated the King James version.

*According to the authors of the King James version of the bible, the statements contained in parentheses within the New Testament text, did not appear in the original transcripts of the bible.

Understanding that the phrase "only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus" was added by the translators, we can, I believe rightfully, summise that those Samarians had only been baptized in water within the tradition of the Jews and had not yet fully placed their faith in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ to the point of salvation.

I know this lesson is complicated and that my assertions have been virtually unheard of until now. It is my sincere hope that as these lessons progress we will be able to come to a full understanding of the term "baptism" and its place in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Misinterpretation of the intent of that term, if what I firmly believe is true, is the cause of the loss of millions of souls that have misplaced their faith by placing it in water baptism instead of in the saving power of our Lord Jesus Christ crucified, resurrected, and ascended.~

Lesson 1132

(Lesson 1132)(10-29-14) Acts 8:9-17

The beginning of today's quote identifies Simon, "the sorcerer", as a sly man who had for a long time fooled the Samarian people with his sorcery.

The body of today's lesson contains some of what appear to be very confusing and contradicting statements about baptism and the qualifications for receiving the Holy Ghost.

Verse twelve says; "But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST, THEY WERE BAPTIZED, both men and women."

It should be understood that those men and women, after having heard Philip preach Jesus Christ, were baptized in water. However, they were baptized in water only for the purpose of obeying Jewish law and tradition as will become clearer later in this lesson. They were most certainly NOT to achieve salvation.

Remember, John the baptist clearly gave us the Jewish purpose for baptizing in water; "I indeed baptize you with water UNTO REPENTANCE: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: HE SHALL BAPTIZE YOU WITH THE HOLY GHOST, and with fire"

Water baptism clearly has nothing to do with receiving the Holy Ghost.

The moment a lost soul is redeemed through faith in the blood of Jesus Christ that soul receives the Holy Ghost.

The following quote from Acts 10:47 clearly verifies that fact; "Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which

WHICH HAVE RECEIVED THE HOLY GHOST AS WELL AS WE?" Peter made it very clear that those for whom he had asked baptismal water, had ALREADY RECEIVED THE HOLY GHOST.

In the final analysis of today's quote we find that those who were referred to as having "believed" Philip preaching the name of Jesus Christ, and were "baptized" in the "name of Jesus Christ", had only been taught according to "John's baptism", they had not yet truly understood how they must accept Jesus Christ as their eternal Redeemer.

Salvation and the coming of the Holy Ghost was not accomplished for those men and women until Peter and John came and prayed for, and with, them.

It is good to note also that they were NOT baptized in water after they received the Holy Ghost as implied as necessary in Acts 10:47.~

NOTE: There will be much further discussion of baptism and its true implications as these lessons progress.

Lesson 1131

(Lesson 1131)(10-28-14) Acts 8:1-8

"And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles. And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him.

As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison. Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.

Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them. And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed. And there was great joy in that city."

The first part of today's lesson relates the cruelty that was inflicted upon the early Christian Jews by Saul and the Romans. It also relates how those early gospel preachers were scattered throughout the region because of their belief in, and testimony for, Jesus Christ.

Saul was both a devout Jew, and a Roman citizen who had an obviously intense hatred for Christians.

After being approached and converted by Jesus, "Saul" was renamed "Paul" and was assigned the title of Apostle to the Gentiles. Paul would later become one of the most studied and best known of the Apostles.

Today's lesson also verifies that the "body of Christ", (The Church as a whole) is made up of separate local groups who themselves are also referred to as "the Church". This contention is verified by the phrase, "THE CHURCH which was AT Jerusalem". The "Church AT Jerusalem" is a clear reference to a separated group of born again Christians who were assembled in Jerusalem, the same as, for example, the group of born again believers who made up the Church "AT" Laodicea.

The Last part of today's quote relates how Philip traveled to Samaria preaching the gospel of Christ and working many miracles through the power of the Holy Ghost.~

Lesson 1130

(Lesson 1130)(10-27-14) Acts Chapter 7

"Then said the high priest, Are these things so? And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran, And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee. Then came he out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell. And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.

And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years. And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this place. And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs. And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him, And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

Now there came a dearth over all the land of Egypt and Chanaan, and great affliction: and our fathers found no sustenance. But when Jacob heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first. And at the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph's kindred was made known unto Pharaoh. Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls. So Jacob went down into Egypt, and died, he, and our fathers, And were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem.

But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt, Till another king arose, which knew not Joseph. The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live. In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father's house three months: And when he was cast out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.

And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds. And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel. And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian: For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.

And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another? But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us? Wilt thou kill me, as thou diddest the Egyptian yesterday?

Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons. And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush. When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the Lord came unto him, Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abrham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold.

Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground. I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.

This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush. He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years. This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear. This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us: To whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt, Saying unto Aaron, Make us gods to go before us: for as for this Moses, which brought us out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.

And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands. Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness? Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.

Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen. Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David; Who found favour before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob. But Solomon built him an house.

Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet, Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest? Hath not my hand made all these things? Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.

Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers: Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.

When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth. But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord, And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man's feet, whose name was Saul.

And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep."

Acts chapter seven contains the sermon Stephen preached accounting the history of the Hebrew people and their total lack of faith in God. The sermon Stephen preached also demonstrated the historical deception and treachery of the Jewish leadership.

After Stephen had accurately blamed the Jews for their constant disobedience and their total lack of faith in God, the Jews promptly stoned him to death.

It should be noted that "Saul", one of the most feared persecutors of Christians during that period, stood over Stephen's body as he died.

Saul, after a confrontation with Jesus one the road to Damascus, would be renamed "Paul" and would become the Apostle to the Gentiles and would spread the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the known world.

Do you know anyone today who would allow themselves to be stoned to death in defense of the gospel?~

Lesson 1129

(Lesson 1129)(10-26-14) Acts 6:8-15

"And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people. Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen. And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake. Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God. And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council, And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law: For we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us. And all that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel."

In today's lesson Stephen, although he had been selected to remain and serve the Church as a deacon, while the others traveled abroad to spread the word of God, was falsely condemned by the Jews for preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ in their synagogues.

NOTE:There seems to be some possible contradiction herein concerning the duties of those who were selected as *deacons of the Church in Jerusalem, expecially Stephen and Phillip, seeing that they both obviously proselytized in different areas throughout the region instead of remaining with their communities as they were selected to do.

We will attempt to shed a bit more light on this possible contradiction as these lessons continue.~

*The qualifications for being selected a deacon in the Church as they are described by Timothy; "the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus." (1 Timothy 3:8-13)

Lesson 1128

(Lesson 1128)(10-25-14) Acts chapter 6:1-7

"And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch: Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them. And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith."

Today's lesson relates the creation of the office of deacon within the Church. The duties of the men who occupied that office were to make sure the physical and spiritual needs of the families and communities of the early Church were met while the others continued their work as traveling evangelists. That action was taken after there were complaints that the men of the Church were abandoning their duty to their families, and community while traveling abroad to spread the gospel of Christ.

The duties of a deacon will be further discussed in the book of Timothy, as these lessons progress.~

Lesson 1127

(Lesson 1127)(10-24-14) Acts 5:17-42

"Then the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him, (which is the sect of the Sadducees,) and were filled with indignation, And laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the common prison. But the angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them forth, and said Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life. And when they heard that, they entered into the temple early in the morning, and taught.

But the high priest came, and they that were with him, and called the council together, and all the senate of the children of Israel and sent to the prison to have them brought. But when the officers came, and found them not in the prison, they returned, and told, Saying, The prison truly found we shut with all safety, and the keepers standing without before the doors: but when we had opened, we found no man within.

Now when the high priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these things, they doubted of them whereunto this would grow. Then came one and told them, saying, Behold, the men whom ye put in prison are standing in the temple, and teaching the people. Then went the captain with the officers, and brought them without violence: for they feared the people, lest they should have been stoned.

And when they had brought them, they set them before the council: and the high priest asked them, Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us. Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.

The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.

When they heard that, they were cut to the heart, and took counsel to slay them. Then stood there up one in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in reputation among all the people, and commanded to put the apostles forth a little space; And said unto them, Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what ye intend to do as touching these men.
For before these days rose up Theudas, boasting himself to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered, and brought to nought. After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing, and drew away much people after him: he also perished; and all, even as many as obeyed him, were dispersed. And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought: But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God. And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name. And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ."

Today's quote teaches us more about the power that is given to those of us who believe in our Lord Jesus Christ.

As we read in the quote, the Apostles, being again freed from prison and emboldened by the power of the Holy Ghost, continued to preach Jesus crucified to the crowds who gathered at the temple as God had commanded.

This lesson is very important in that it relates how the Holy Ghost interacts with those of us who actually have absolute faith in Jesus Christ.

If we today, would TRULY believe, as did those Apostles who were imprisoned countless times for their belief and diligence, we too could do all manner of great things toward the expansion of the Church and furtherance of the gospel of Christ.

Sadly, far too many of today's "Christians" would rather just warm a pew two or three times a week, while waiting for some lost soul to come sit down beside them and rely on others to do the footwork for the Lord.

Sadly again, there are almost no "others" who are willing to actually do the work.

It is way past time that all of us who bear the mantel of Christianity, energized ourselves and become much more active in teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to every soul who will listen. We must take the message to the lost, they are seldom ever going to be found sitting in a "Church" pew.

The unrelenting dedication of those early disciples who, with the awesome power of the Holy Ghost, every day, put their lives and freedom on the line, is what allowed salvation to reach those of us who enjoy the security of everlasting life today.

It is our duty as children of God to do everything in our power, (Which includes the power of the Holy Ghost through us.) just as those Apostles did, to see to it that Satan loses and Jesus Christ ultimately wins the battle for lost souls.

Today's Church reminds me of the Church at Laodicea mentioned in Revelation 3:14-16, "And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth."~

Lesson 1126

(Lesson 1126)(10-23-14) Acts 5:12-16

"And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch. And of the rest durst no man join himself to them: but the people magnified them. And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.) Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them. There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one."

Today's quote relates the first time women are mentioned as being added having been added to, or made a part of, the Church. "And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.

This lesson also tells us of the great faith that was demonstrated by the masses of people as they placed their faith in Christ and came to be have their illnesses healed and their sins forgiven.

Wouldn't it be a wonderful revival if today the true Church were so widely respected, and accepted, so as to have thousands of people stream in daily to hear of the saving grace of God and to take part in the miracle of eternal salvation?~

Lesson 1125

(Lesson 1125)(10-22-14) Acts 5:1-11

"But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet. But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things. And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him. And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in. And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much. Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out. Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband. And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things."

Today's quote relates how Ananias and his wife Sapphira conspired together to deceive the Church by holding back a part of the value of their property.

It also demonstrates that they lost their lives, not because they didn't give up all the money, but because they chose, out of their own greed, to lie to the Holy Ghost.

Peter very clearly told Ananias that he had had no reason to lie since the land was theirs before they sold it, and ALL the money they received for it belonged to them after the sale. Their lie to the presence of God is what cost them their lives.

God doesn't require that His children give anything to anyone, however, as Jesus said to the "rich young ruler": "If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me." (Matthew 19:21)

That simply means that if we seek to be "perfect" we should give up everything we own for the purpose of our Lord Jesus Christ and in doing so we will lay up riches in heaven.

We should never give because we think it is demanded of us. We are to give because we want to, Jesus promised us time and time again that whatever we give out of love will be returned to us an hundred times over if we only give in faith.~

Lesson 1124

(Lesson 1124)(10-21-14) Acts 4:23-37

"And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them. And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is: Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ. For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done. And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus. And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness. And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common. And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all. Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need. And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus, Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles' feet."

Today's quote relates that after Peter and John were released by the Jews, they returned to join the rest of the Jews who believed in Christ, praising God and praying for strength to continue their work.

The lesson goes further and relates how each of those early Church members sold their properties and brought their money and the things they owned together, placing them in a single account for the common good.

Though there are few, if any, of today's "Christians" who would admit that this lesson promotes socialism, or even communism within the Church, in spite of the erroneous outcry to the contrary, it most certainly does.

Sadly, the vast majority of today's "Christians", by establishing that the "Church" is an entity set apart from its individual membership, (a position with which I adamantly disagree), denounces anything remotely resembling communism as intended governing policy within the Church itself. It is resoundingly clear by what is written in this text that the early Church was definitely governed as a commune.

There is no bible instruction that requires the Church to be a commune it is simply the best way to maintain unity and sense of purpose among the members of the Church. It is very difficult to argue that the Church wouldn't be a much more effective unit today if it indeed still functioned as a commune.

It is up to those of us who seek to maintain the pure intent of the New Testament gospel, to study these lessons and apply what we learn to our daily lives whether the "Church" agrees with us, or not.~

Lesson 1123

(Lesson 1123)(10-20-14) Acts 4:13-22

"Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus. And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it. But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves, Saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it. But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name. And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard. So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people: for all men glorified God for that which was done. For the man was above forty years old, on whom this miracle of healing was shewed."

Today's quote relates that after determining who Peter and John were, and after finding no way to punish them, because so many had witnessed the healing miracle they had performed through the power of the Holy Ghost, the Jewish leadership gave Peter and John a warning, then let them go.

This lesson marks the beginning of a campaign by the leaders of the Jews to have the Apostles killed or otherwise discredited.

As the New Testament tells us in the upcoming lessons, the Jews would not go away easily, they tried everything in their power to destroy Christianity and the true Church. They would even convince some of the early Christians that they should incorporate Jewish law and tradition into the worship practices of the Church. This is evidenced by the ritualistic way most modern "Church" services are administered and by some of their practices, such as water baptism.~

Lesson 1122

(Lesson 1122)(10-19-14) Acts 4:5-12

"And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers, and elders, and scribes, And Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem. And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have ye done this? Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole; Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."

In today's lesson, Peter and John were set in judgment before all the Jewish leadership and were again asked by what power they had healed the lame man. Peter said; "Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole."

Peter and John took no credit for the healing of the lame man, but rather gave all the credit to God through the power granted them by Jesus Christ. They renounced the ways of Judaism and identified Jesus as the corner stone of the new church and again affirmed that being immersed in the blood of Jesus is the only means by which a lost soul can be saved.~

Lesson 1121

(Lesson 1121)(10-18-14) Acts 4:1-4

"And as they spake unto the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them, Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead. And they laid hands on them, and put them in hold unto the next day: for it was now eventide. Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand."

Today's quote tells us that, after they had, that day, preached salvation through faith in the blood of Jesus, Peter and John were taken into custody by the Jewish authority.

This lesson also tells us that from among the throng who had gathered, because of the message preached, and the miracle performed by Peter and John, five thousand more souls were saved and converted from among the Jews.~

Lesson 1120

(Lesson 1120)(10-17-14) Acts Chapter 3
"Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour. And a certain man lame from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple; Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms. And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us. And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them. Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ancle bones received strength. And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God.
And all the people saw him walking and praising God: And they knew that it was he which sat for alms at the Beautiful gate of the temple: and they were filled with wonder and amazement at that which had happened unto him. And as the lame man which was healed held Peter and John, all the people ran together unto them in the porch that is called Solomon's, greatly wondering. And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk? The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go. But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses. And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all. And now, brethren, I wot that through ignorance ye did it, as did also your rulers. But those things, which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled. Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began. For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people. Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days. Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities."

The body of today's quote relates how, after Peter and John had healed the lame man, the Jewish men who were gathered there at the temple were amazed at what they had witnessed and began questioning Peter and John about their power over what had crippled the man.
Assuming that those Jews had crucified Christ out of ignorance, and because of their intense interest, the Apostles took the opportunity to preach, from the beginning, God's plan of salvation just as it had been preached at the miraculous Pentecost celebration.
Concerning their redemption and the remission of their sins, Peter told those men the exact same thing he had told the three thousand souls that were added to the Church at Pentecost, he simply stated it differently.
This time, instead of using a variation of the term "baptize" Peter simply said in verse 19; Repent ye therefore, and BE CONVERTED, that your sins may be blotted out. Being "converted" meant that those men should give up their belief that obedience to the law could save them and rather, to rely, through faith, on the blood of Jesus Christ for their salvation.
The term "converted", as Peter applied it herein, better defines the process of salvation because it does not allow for the confusion the term "baptize" sometimes creates.
We should make note that Peter made NO mention of water in these instructions, he merely stated what had to be done, those men would need to be CONVERTED and have their sins blotted out by the blood of Jesus Christ crucified.
The confusion over the word "baptized" stems from the fact that the Jews had practiced it for thousands of years to prepare an unclean person for any form of worship, it was Hebrew law throughout the ages.
Although water is sometimes the implied medium in to which a person is to be baptized, it most certainly is not always, nor is it in connection with salvation. Accordingly, the baptism of John the Baptist, a water immersion, merely 'prepared' the unclean Jew for 'conversion'. John said,"I indeed baptize you with water UNTO REPENTANCE: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: HE SHALL BAPTIZE YOU WITH THE HOLY GHOST, and with fire:" (Matthew 3:11)
When properly studied, it becomes vividly clear that water baptism has nothing to do with remittance of sin, but alternatively, baptism into the blood of Jesus Christ is indeed the ONLY remitter of sin. Jesus very clearly said; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
I can't repeat the importance of this study enough because almost every "Christian" religion on earth erroneously teaches that water baptism is one step in the process of achieving eternal life. It is our duty as servants of Jesus Christ to see to it that this horrible misunderstanding be made clear to every soul who is willing to listen.
"For by grace are ye saved THROUGH FAITH; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9)~

Lesson 1119

(Lesson 1119)(10-16-14) Acts 2:40-47
"And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. And all that believed were together, and had all things common; And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved."

In verse forty one of today's quote the Author says; "Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls." It is very important that we apply yesterday's lesson to this statement so as to understand that the word "baptized", as it is applied herein, is not in reference to a water immersion.
It should be said that in all practicality it would have been physically impossible for those few men to have baptized three thousand souls in water within the few hours available while they continued to preach the gospel throughout the day.
What verse forty one actually intends is that those who believed and accepted God's promise, as presented by the Apostles' sermon at Pentecost, were immersed in the soul saving blood of Jesus Christ upon accepting the Apostles words, by faith.
Those three thousand souls were indeed "baptized" in the blood of Christ, NOT in water. Those three thousand souls, after having been saved by being "baptized" into the blood of Jesus Christ through believing in Him, were then added to the Church.
Today's quote goes further to relate that all the members of the Church were in full accord, all pulling in the same direction, and prayerfully dedicated to the task that was charged to them by Jesus Himself.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if today all those who claim to be Christian were pulling together toward what Jesus actually intended for His Church?
It is important to note that ONLY the saved were added to the Church. These last few lessons have explained in detail how a lost soul is to be saved, they are verified by Paul and Silas in Acts 16:31 when asked; Sirs, what must I do to be saved? they said, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house."
These chosen men of God made NO mention of water baptism as having anything to do with either eternal salvation, or as a qualification for entry into the Church.~

Lesson 1118

(Lesson 1118)(10-14-14) Acts 2:39

"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call."

I have reposted yesterday's quote to further demonstrate the true intent of Peter's use of the term "baptized" as it appears in verse thirty eight of that quote.

I hope also to clear up the ill conceived notion that water was the medium into which Peter was advising those Jews to be "baptized".

As we have established in previous lessons, the Greek term "baptizo" from which our English word "baptize" was transliterated, as it is applied throughout the New Testament, and simply defined, means to place one 'something' into another 'something' so as to change or alter the nature of the first 'something'.

For example, to make pickles, one must baptize cucumbers into a brine or vinegar solution and leave them there so as to change them from cucumbers into pickles.

If one simply dips cucumbers in brine and brings them right back out one simply gets wet briny cucumbers, NOT pickles. In order for a cucumber to become a pickle it must remain in the brine solution until it is consumed.

The same is true with the soul saving baptism Peter intended. If a lost soul is merely dipped in water and taken right back out, it merely becomes a wet, lost soul. Whereas, if you immerse that lost soul, by faith, into the shed blood of Jesus Christ and leave it there, it becomes a perfectly righteous, eternally redeemed soul and a brother or sister to Jesus Himself. "For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ."(Galatians 3:27)

Some might say, why couldn't one be baptized into the blood of Christ then taken right back out?

The answer is simple, once a lost soul is buried within the blood of Jesus Christ it cannot come out on its own, nor can it be taken out, it is sealed there by the Holy Spirit of God; "And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, WHEREBY YE ARE SEALED UNTO THE DAY OF REDEMPEION." (Ephesians 4:30)

Therefore, we can easily see that Peter's intent was that those Jews who believed in Jesus were NOT to be simply dipped in water but rather they were to be buried by faith in the soul saving blood of Jesus Christ and sealed by the Holy Spirit.

Further, as was also stated by Peter, each redeemed soul, after having been baptized into the blood of Christ, would receive the power of the Holy Ghost.~

Lesson 1117

(Lesson 1117)(10-13-14) Acts 2:37-39

"Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call."

In verse thirty eight of today's quote Peter makes a statement that Roman Catholicism along with the so-called Churches of Christ and many other isms use as part of an erroneous claim that water baptism is an essential step in the process of eternal salvation.

That contention is so totally wrong, and if it is accepted as truth by the lost, it causes them to place their faith, not solely in the saving power of Christ, but rather in a physical act of man, water baptism.

Belief in Jesus Christ the man, and Faith in His soul saving sacrifice, is the ONLY precondition to eternal salvation. "whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life." (John 3:15 in part)

Most every Judeo-Christian religious group acknowledges that we are all born sinners because of the disobedience of Adam. Those who have studied the bible at all know that sin is what condemns our souls to hell. We also know that in order to receive salvation we must be completely free of sin in the spirit, having had our sins absolutely forgiven, or remitted, by God the Father through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, then remanded to the safe keeping of the Holy Spirit.

John the Baptist was divinely sent to teach the coming of Jesus by whom sin would be remitted, speaking of the purpose of John's coming, Luke said; "To give knowledge of salvation unto his people BY THE REMISSION OF THEIR SINS, Through the tender mercy of our God". (Luke 1:77-78 in part). Thereby we see that God demanded that in order for us to reunite with Him, our sins must be remitted and that Jesus is the only remitter.

What then is able to remit sin, is it water? No, it is the blood of Jesus Christ; "For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins." (Matt. 26:28)

Jesus' blood was shed explicitly for the remission of sins.

Jesus gave us an example of how FAITH is what it takes to have our sins forgiven through the blood of Jesus Christ; "And when he saw their FAITH, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee." (Luke 5:20) Jesus made it very clear to that man that it was FAITH that caused his sins to be forgiven. "For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus." (Galatians 3:26)

Another example demonstrating that Jesus is the source of remission of sin; "To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever BELIEVETH in him SHALL receive remission of sins." (Acts 10:43)

When Peter said "Repent, and be baptized", he was NOT implying that those men should be baptized in water to receive remission of sin, he meant that they were should, through faith, be baptized in the blood of Jesus Christ to receive remission. And then, after their sins were remitted by the blood of Christ, they would assuredly receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Peter was in fact referring to a baptism into the blood of Jesus Christ.

There were actually two distinctly different applications of the term "baptize" that were implied in that sermon at Pentecost. One being the baptism into the blood of Jesus Christ through the faith of those who believed, and the the baptism of the Holy Ghost which followed their salvation.

Today's lesson is one of the most important to be found in the New Testament and should be studied thoroughly by every serious bible student.

It is our commanded purpose to make sure that God's word is taught within its true context and with it's true intent.

I hope I have made this lesson clear enough to be understood. If I haven't, please feel free to comment or ask questions.

Tomorrow's lesson should further verify today's.~

Lesson 1116

(Lesson 1116)(10-08-14) Acts 2:16-21

"But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God,I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved."

Today's quote restates a prophesy made by Joel projecting the coming of the Holy Ghost. That prophesy was fulfilled at the Pentecost celebration when the Church received the Holy Ghost immediately following Jesus' ascension.

By quoting this prophesy to the mass of Jewish men, Peter was demonstrating the authenticity of the ministry and gospel of Jesus Christ as it had been affirmed throughout Jewish history.

The actual prophesy from Joel is as follows, "And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call." (Joel 2:28-32)

In the very last part of the original prophesy, Joel noted that there would be only a few from among the Jews who would be saved subject to the Lord's "call".

This is important because a great part of the New Testament text is to, or about, the Jews and their refusal to accept Jesus as the promised Messiah.

It seems that Paul and the others had no problem converting Gentiles, but were hunted and continually threatened by the Jewish leadership as they went about spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Through the transformation brought about by Jesus and the establishment of His Church, the Jews lost their "chosen" status and became no more to God than the Gentiles; "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for YE ARE ALL ONE in Christ Jesus." (Galatians 3:28)~

Lesson 1115

(Lesson1115)(10-07-14) Acts 2:5-15

"And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this? Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine. But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day."

Today's quote begins the sermon at the Pentecost celebration preached by Peter and the other Apostles after they had received the power of the Holy Ghost.

That sermon initiated the evangelistic process of expanding the Church that Jesus had established during His ministry, just as He had commanded.

The miracle that was performed that day was not a miracle in the tongues of the speakers, as many contend, but rather it was a miracle within the ears of those who were gathered to listen.

Peter and the others spoke in the language that was commonly used by the local Jews, probably Hebrew or Aramiac, while the listeners heard the words they spoke in the language of their home regions. One of the listeners is quoted to have said, "we do hear them speak in OUR tongues the wonderful works of God."

This is very important to point out because there are some devout "Christians" who, even yet today, hold on to the false contention that some people are divinely selected as miraculous vessels through which the Holy Spirit speaks some language (Unknown tongue) that can only be interpreted by someone else who is also miraculously overcome by the Holy Spirit, so as to interpret what the original speaker has said.

If understanding this explanation is difficult for those who have studied and pretty much know the intent of the bible, imagine how confusing it would be for the lost who have no bible education.

As can be easily seen, the process of "speaking in tongues" would serve no purpose other than to confuse lost souls.

It behooves us all to recognize that ALL those men present for the sermon at the Pentecost celebration were Jews who had come from all over the known world, "DEVOUT JEWS", as was stated in the quote, "Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven."

This is important to remember because it will help us better understand that this sermon, being preached to Jews only, establishes a great part of the context within which that sermon was preached.

Some of those present were so stunned by the miracle so as to think Peter and the others were drunk. Peter quickly dispelled that idea by reminding them that it was to early in the day to be drunk.~

Lesson 1114

(Lesson 1114)(10-06-14) Acts 2:1-5

"And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance."

Today's quote describes the baptism of the Holy Ghost that Jesus had promised to His Church. The Holy Ghost (Holy Spirit) is the protecting and preserving power of God that is granted to every child of God through His Church.

Those approximately one hundred and twenty disciples who were present in that house were the very first members of the Church Jesus had assembled during His ministry. This is very important to remember in that later that same day, there would be approximately five thousand souls added to the Church.

We should remember that from the beginning, John the Baptist preached that although he indeed baptized with water, Jesus would baptize with the Holy Ghost. The events that occurred in today's quote fulfilled John's prophesy.

It also behooves us to note that there is no mention of water in association with the baptism of the Holy Ghost that occurred there at Pentecost. This tells us that the term "baptize", being applied herein to describe an overcoming of the Holy Ghost by the wind, can describe far more that just an immersion in water.

The English word "baptize" was transliterated from the Greek word "baptizo" and should have the same implications in English as baptizo does in Ancient Greek.

To baptize simply means to place a person, or thing, into a substance, or set of circumstances, so as to alter the original characteristics of that person or thing.

When the bible transliteration was made from Greek to English the specific intent of the term "baptize", in each of it's many applications, was not carried forward leaving its intent to be determined strictly by the context within which it is applied.

The failure to explain the many intents of the term "baptize" has led most bible scholars to simply imply that the term "baptize", except when it is applied to the coming of the Holy Ghost, to always suggests water as the medium into which a person is "baptized".

The failure of those early scholars to explain that the English term baptize simply means to place within, or enclose within for the purpose of altering, just as the ancient Greek term baptizo did, has led to a gross misinterpretation of the gospel of Jesus Christ by most modern religious isms and has led many to teach that water baptism is demanded as a step in the process of eternal salvation.

I make note of this discrepancy because as we continue our New Testament study, we will encounter the term "baptize", or one of its' many grammatic variants, many times as we proceed and this knowledge should help determine what the term means within the context it is applied.~

Lesson 1113

(Lesson 1113)(10-05-14) Acts 1:12-26

"Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey. And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James. These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren. And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,) Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus. For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry. Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out. And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood. For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take. Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection. And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen, That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place. And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles."

Today's quote relates how eleven of the original twelve Apostles while obeying Jesus' command to stay in Jerusalem, along with about one hundred and ten of those closest to Jesus assembled themselves in Jerusalem and awaited the coming of the Holy Ghost.

Judas, after betraying Jesus to the high priest, had committed suicide and was no longer counted among the Apostles. As the disciples waited, they chose a replacement for Judas.

There was a heavy restriction placed on those who might possibly replace Judas among the twelve. The replacement was required to have been present with Jesus from the time He was baptized by John, until Jesus ascended back to the Father.

Peter, speaking only of those present, said; "Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection".

From among those qualified the eleven original Apostles selected two possibilities for Judas' replacement, Matthais and Justus. They "cast lots" to choose between the two with Matthias being finally selected.

(The way they chose Matthias should be noted by those who condemn "gambling" because the Roman soldiers "cast lots" to determine which soldier would get to keep Jesus' coat.

In both instances the casting of lots had nothing to do with gambling as it is practiced today but rather was a fair means of making a choice between more than one possibility.)

Today's lesson disproves the false contention made by Roman Catholicism et al, that the original twelve Apostles were to select a replacement every time one of the twelve was lost. The prime qualification for being an Apostle was that the man MUST have been present at the baptism of Jesus as He fulfilled the Law, and he MUST have been present to watch Jesus ascend to heaven after His resurrection. Common sense tells us that there have been none qualified under those restrictions since the death of Paul who was personally selected by Jesus Himself.

One other common misunderstanding can also be cleared up by today's lesson. There are some who use this quote to assert that the water baptism of a child of God must be traceable to the "baptism of John". Even if that were actually possible, we can easily see that what Peter said had nothing to do with one's water baptism, but rather, what he said applied ONLY to those who might replace Judas as an Apostle. ~

Lesson 1112

(Lesson 1112)(10-04-14) Acts 1:1-11

"The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven."

In the first part of today's quote the author of the book of Acts affirms the gospel of Jesus Christ as it was recorded by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The author also quoted what John the Baptist and Jesus had said, in all four gospel accounts, concerning the coming of the Holy Ghost; "For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence".

In the above quote Jesus made a very clear distinction between water baptism, or water immersion of the type John the Baptist had practiced, and the immersion into the Holy Ghost which Jesus would cause to occur upon His Church at Pentecost.

Both occurrences however, were defined in the bible transliteration by the same term, "baptize", which literally, and simply, means to place one object, within another in order to alter the original state of that object.

Most all of today's "Christian religions", because they erroneously misapply the intent of the term "baptize", by most always applying it to define a water immersion, mistakenly contend that in order to achieve eternal salvation one must be baptized in water. Nothing could be further from the truth.

As today's lesson very clearly demonstrates the baptism referenced by Jesus, almost every time He applied it, had nothing to do with water and everything to do with the granting of the Holy Spirit, His sacrificial ordeal, or the sanctification of the eternal soul through the authority of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

This very important subject will be revisited and confirmed several times as these lesson progress.

The latter part of today's quote confirms the ascension of Jesus as He rose to rejoin the Father in heaven and His promise to return and collect those of us whom have placed our trust in Him.~

Lesson 1111

(Lesson 1111)(10-03-14) John 21:18-25

"Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not. This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me. Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee? Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do? Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me. Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true. And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen."

The content of today's quote can be confusing if it is not carefully parsed. After charging Peter to teach the mystery of Christianity, Jesus said; "When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not. This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God."

This meant that Peter and the others were no longer free to do as they pleased, but rather, they were charged to represent the gospel of Jesus Christ abandoning all other aspects of life.

Jesus also predicted that Peter would be put to death because of his devotion to Christianity.

In the last part of the quote there is an interesting exchange between Peter and Jesus concerning John, the brother of Jesus, and his having followed Jesus and Peter as they left.

This text does not relate where they were going nor why. Neither does it explain why Peter got upset that John was tagging along.

There were some who interpreted the discussion to mean that John would never face a natural death. I cannot make any connection to that contention from what Jesus said, and apparently, neither could John.

Speaking of himself, John said, "This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true."

I'm confident that through prayerful study the true intent of that conversation between Jesus and Peter will become much clearer.~

Lessin 1110

(Lesson 1110)(10-02-14) John 21:15-19

"So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep. Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not. This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me."

Three times in today's lesson Jesus tested Peter's love for Him, and three times He told Peter to "feed my sheep".

Through that simple instruction Jesus ordered Peter to be a pillar, the most faithful "rock" for the rest of His disciples. Not that Peter was given authority over them but that he was indeed responsible to them that they be sure and come to know the secrets of the doctrine Jesus had only taught in parables.

This fulfilled another prophesy; "That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world." (Matthew 13:35)

Peter, through the guidance of the Holy Ghost, was to make the "secrets" of the parables known to all the other disciples.

Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles, was also given the "sectrets" directly from Jesus; "How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:" (Ephesians 3:3-6)

Jesus had told Peter and the others before that the Holy Ghost would teach them all things; "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you." (John 14:26) Jesus' instruction to Peter in today's lesson was a simple follow up to what had been said in earlier lessons.~

Lessin 1109

(Lesson 1109)(10-01-14) John 21:1-14

"After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself. There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples. Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No. And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes. Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea. And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes. As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread. Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught. Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, and hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken. Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord. Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise. This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead."

In today's quote Jesus appeared to His disciples for the third time and by performing yet another miracle which caused their nets to be filled with fish. After witnessing this miracle they all recognized and sat down to eat with Jesus.~
